Respiratory Care Program

The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) has named Crafton Hills College’s Respiratory Care Program a recipient of the Distinguished Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credentialing Success Award.

The nod is part of the organization’s “continued efforts to value the RRT credential as a standard professional achievement,” CoARC officials wrote in a letter addressed to program director Michael Sheahan.

“From a program effectiveness perspective, the CoARC views the RRT credential as a measure of a program’s success in inspiring its graduates to achieve their highest educational and professional aspirations,” the letter said.

To earn the award programs must meet a list of criteria based on “key accreditation metrics” outlined in a 2017 report of current status.

Programs are required to document three or more years of outcome data; hold accreditation without a progress report; document RRT credentialing success of 90 percent or above; meet or exceed CoARC thresholds for CRT credentialing success, retention, on-time graduation rate, and overall employer and graduate satisfaction.

“The CoARC extends its sincere congratulations to you, your faculty, students, and graduates for meeting these rigorous criteria,” the letter said.

This is the first time Crafton has been included in the “distinguished program acknowledgement,” said Sheahan by email, adding, “We were excited to be included in the distinguished program process.”

“This is a collective effort among all faculty and an achievement that could not have been accomplished without such a wonderful and dedicated faculty,” he continued. “We are very proud of this achievement and know that continued program improvement will lead to greater success.”

Between 25-35 students graduate from the program each year. Around 90 schools of 460 receive the honor, Sheahan said.

CoARC plans to recognize award recipients during a reception planned for July 17 at the JW Marriot San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa.
