The San Bernardino Community College District (SBCCD) and Crafton Hills College (CHC) marked a significant milestone on Wednesday, May 31, with a groundbreaking event for the highly anticipated Finkelstein Performing Arts Center. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as the new home for the college's music, theater, and dance programs, providing cutting-edge instructional spaces for students to hone their artistic talents.

Thanks to the generous support of the community and the passage of the voter-approved bond measure CC, coupled with state-matching funds, the new Finkelstein Performing Arts Center will become a reality. The construction of this modern, multifunctional, 24,000 square-foot performing arts venue will replace the existing Finkelstein Performing Arts Center, while still honoring the Finkelstein family, who graciously donated over 500 acres of land on which the college stands.

The Finkelstein Performing Arts Center will be a hub of creativity and innovation, equipped with a host of features designed to enhance the learning and performance experience. The new building will house a 274-seat main theater, providing a grand stage for large-scale productions, as well as a smaller blackbox theater for more intimate performances. Dressing rooms, a green room, and various offices will support the smooth operation of productions, while a scene shop and costume shop will provide essential resources for the college's thriving theater department.

In addition to the theater spaces, the Finkelstein Performing Arts Center will also offer dedicated music labs and a state-of-the-art recording studio, further bolstering the college's commitment to fostering musical talent and facilitating the production of high-quality audio content. This comprehensive facility will serve as a catalyst for artistic growth, allowing students to explore their creative potential to the fullest.

One notable aspect of the Finkelstein Performing Arts Center is its environmentally conscious design. The project has gained recognition for its green building efficiencies and sustainable operations, aligning with the college's commitment to environmental stewardship. The facility will feature shaded patios and specially designed windows that maximize natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting. Solar panels will contribute to increased energy efficiency, while drought-tolerant landscaping and electric car charging stations will play a crucial role in the college's efforts to achieve carbon neutrality.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together key stakeholders, community leaders, faculty, and students who shared in the excitement surrounding this transformative project. Speaking at the event, Dr. Kevin Horan, President of Crafton Hills College, expressed his gratitude for the community's support and emphasized the immense impact the Finkelstein Performing Arts Center will have on the college and the wider region.

To ensure the longevity of these programs and their continued success, Dr. Horan announced various naming opportunities and seats for dedicated individuals who wish to contribute. These opportunities allow donors to have their support acknowledged with engraved plaques, forever leaving their mark on the institution and its endeavors.

Elaine Rosen, a philanthropist with a deep passion for the arts, has already demonstrated her commitment by generously donating $500,000 to the college. In recognition of her generosity, the music room will be named in her honor, serving as a lasting tribute to her belief in the power of arts education.

The Finkelstein Performing Arts Center is slated for completion in fall 2025, with an official opening expected to take place shortly thereafter. Crafton Hills College, in partnership with the San Bernardino Community College District, looks forward to the future of arts education and the boundless opportunities this magnificent center will provide for students, faculty, and the entire community.
