Sexual Violence Risk Reduction

At Parties or Clubs:

  • Let someone know where you are going, who you'll be with, and when you'll be home.
  • Meet in a public place.
  • Don't drink anything you did not get yourself, or see made.
  • If you set your drink down and lose sight of it, do not drink from it.
  • Keep cash with you in case you need to get a taxi home.
  • Trust your gut feeling.
  • Have a buddy system; go to parties or clubs with a friend and be responsible for each other. Have a pre-planned signal for an uncomfortable or dangerous situation, with an action plan.

In a Relationship:

  • Examine your needs and desires before you get into a sexual situation.
  • Clearly tell your partner what you want. If there are limits that you want to maintain, state what they are and stick to them.
  • Clearly ask your partner what he/she wants.
  • Listen to each other.
  • Be aware of non-verbal cues, but do not rely on them. If you are not sure, ask.
  • Communicate clearly and be assertive. Saying "yes" or "no" may be difficult, but it is important. Passive or polite approaches can be misunderstood or ignored.

Personal Safety

  • Move with confidence.
  • Move in well-lit areas, and with a companion if possible.
  • Trust your gut (Campus Police provide escorts to your vehicle or classroom).
  • Scan your surroundings (bushes, around vehicles, dark corners).
  • Lock your car doors and roll up all windows.
  • Park in a well-lit area if possible.
  • Remember you have several weapons at your disposal; e.g. keys, books, pens, hands and feet.
  • See the Guide to Safety on Campus for additional tips.
