Creating Pathways for Success: Faculty Engage in Transformative Equity Workshop

On June 23 and 24, Dr. Lyn Westergard facilitated a robust two-day workshop at Crafton Hills College (CHC) that included a theoretical exploration of scaffolding (i.e., academic support structures) and its application, example lessons from English and STEM, and opportunities for faculty to discuss anti-racist pedagogies. Participants learned about and explored these topics with the goal of improving Crafton’s ongoing efforts to uphold a high standard of student equity and success.

Westergard serves as the curriculum consultant for the ZTC Multilingual Faculty Learning Community and has been integral to both the exploration of the Multilingual Program’s pedagogical practices and the development of its Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) and Open Educational Resource (OER) materials. These programs increase students’ access to learning materials they need to succeed academically, while also breaking down barriers that may inhibit students from fully engaging in their academic journey at Crafton.

As part of the next phase of this work, Westergard visited the CHC campus to support the ZTC Faculty Learning Community as members continued developing their third textbook for Crafton’s Multilingual Program. This faculty group also invited a small group of other faculty to participate in collaborative learning and discussion. The morning session was open to all participants, while the afternoon sessions were dedicated to the ZTC Faculty Learning Community’s ongoing textbook development.

In addition to presenting annual Equity Champion awards, being named Equity Champion for Higher Education in 2023 by The Campaign for College Opportunity, and maintaining a robust student equity and success program, this workshop adds to the many ways that Crafton Hills College and the Multilingual Program demonstrate a strong commitment to improving equity at the college.
