Crafton Hills College Health and Wellness Center

The Health and Wellness Center at Crafton Hills College is making a positive impact on students' lives this year, connecting more than 2,400 individuals with mental health support, wellness education, and community resources through health appointments, workshops, events and outreach initiatives.

The center staff provided 1,272 individual health and mental health appointments and reached another 1,225 students through workshops, events, classroom presentations, tabling and support groups, indicating that the center's work extends well beyond its office walls.

Additionally, there has been an increasing amount of digital access to mental health care. TimelyCare, the College's 24/7 virtual health platform, has seen a significant increase in student usage this year. Currently, 266 students have registered to use TimelyCare, including an increase in participation in both the "Talk Now" on-demand session and their ongoing counseling sessions. Notably, usage has become nearly equal among male and female students, a shift that reflects intentional outreach and programming aimed at reducing the stigma men often face when seeking support.

The center's workshop and support group offerings were built around the real challenges students are navigating, from burnout and anxiety to grief and identity. This year's programming included Navigating Burnout, Anxiety Management, Stress Management, a Self-Compassion Workshop, Mental Health and Nutrition, and Opioid and Alcohol Awareness, alongside ongoing support groups for grief, men's mental health, first-generation students, and anxiety.

In addition to offering individualized services, outreach has been a major focus area for the center this year. The center hosted the IMALIVE mental health awareness event, inviting the campus to participate in several interactive booths hosted by IMALIVE and local community mental health organizations. IMALIVE is an organization that works with communities to increase mental health and suicide awareness. The event was a campus-wide moment that created an environment conducive to openly discussing student wellness.

Staff also conducted tabling and classroom presentations throughout the semester, made proactive connections with students in the Public Safety Allied Health Programs through orientation outreach, and brought workshops directly to the Veterans Resource Center to better serve Crafton's veteran student population.

Additionally, the center worked toward enhancing campus-wide capacity through its partnership with the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health. This year, training was provided to faculty and staff members regarding communication and de-escalation skills and suicide awareness. The center's goal is to create a campus community that can identify when a student may be experiencing difficulty and provide appropriate responses.

For Amanda Smith, associate dean of the Student Health and Wellness Center at Crafton, the numbers tell only part of the story. The bigger shift is cultural.

"We are working toward a proactive, multidimensional approach to health and wellness, one that prioritizes not only individual services, but also outreach, education, and awareness. This has become a space where students can find support, engage in meaningful conversations about their overall well-being, and be connected with campus partners who contribute to their holistic success. Health and Wellness is actively helping to shift the culture, creating a campus environment where conversations about well-being are visible, valued, and integrated into everyday student life and campus wide."
