Education
About Me:
I am a former community college student, former foster youth, and former basic skills student--which means I began college in remedial classes that are no longer offered. These experiences have profoundly shaped my approach to teaching. I believe that education should support your growth and career, not just serve as another hoop to jump through. The goal is for the experience to be valuable.
In my classroom, I use projects to assess learning. This approach allows students to apply methods in meaningful ways, rather than cramming for an exam only to forget the material shortly after. I also tie my lectures to history and culture. Math is not magical; it’s a human construct. Culture, colonization, and power dynamics have significantly shaped the field. It’s important for students to be aware of these influences and how they show up in math education.
I encourage students to revise work for full credit. Sometimes we don’t fully understand something until we’ve had a chance to see it a few times or see it applied in a new way, so I encourage students to demonstrate understanding whenever they’re ready--even if that’s a few lessons later. I offer flexible due dates, but I expect consistent participation and engagement.
