WHY Choose American Sign Language?

American Sign Language (ASL) is the predominant language of Deaf communities in the United States and English-speaking parts of Canada. Many students majoring in ASL choose careers in teaching, interpreting, or community service work. However, many careers do not require a specific major. Your knowledge of a foreign language will be viewed by almost any employer as a tremendous asset.

WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE?

The American Sign Language program at CHC provides students an opportunity to communicate with, and understand the Deaf community.

  • Small classes focusing on hands-on activities and language immersion
  • Each ASL class significantly increases vocabulary and grammatical awareness, as well as provided a deeper understanding of the culture and history of Deaf people.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES MIGHT IT LEAD TO?

An increasing number of students take ASL courses in preparation for transfer to a four year institution intending to major in Deaf Studies and/or Interpreter Training Programs.
