The Associate in Science (AS) degree in Biology at Crafton Hills College is designed to meet the needs of students transferring to a 2 or 4 year institution who intend to major in Biology or a related field of study.
The pathway below represents an efficient and effective course taking sequence for this program. Individual circumstances might require some changes to this pathway. It is always recommended that you meet with an academic counselor to develop a personalized educational plan.
The courses have been intentionally placed and should be prioritized in the order in which they appear. If you are unable to take all the courses in a semester, you should prioritize enrolling in the courses in the order below.

Students wishing to earn an A.S. with an emphasis in Anatomy and Physiology must also complete ANAT 150 and 151. Students wishing to earn an A.S. with an emphasis in Microbiology must also complete MICRO 150 or MICRO 102 and MICRO 247A or 248A. Departmental Recommendation: For exposure to the field of life sciences, enrolling in BIOL 100 General Biology during 1st semester or prior is recommended for students desiring to strengthen their foundational skills.
CHEM 101 - Introduction to Chemistry
Introduction to college chemistry, with an emphasis on the general principles of chemistry, including critical thinking, analysis and problem solving in chemistry. Topics include the study of matter, bonding, the periodic table, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, nomenclature and organic chemistry. Laboratory component is both qualitative and quantitative in scope. Critical thinking, writing, measurement, identification and analysis are emphasized.
ENGLISH COMPOSITION (CHCGE Area D1)
English 101: College Reading and Composition is a first-year course created to build on your existing knowledge and current practices related to reading and writing. In particular, this course focuses on developing your practices of analytical and active reading, conducting academic-level research, and entering into conversations with scholarly and creative thinkers. This course will empower you to make meaningful choices in your writing and develop flexible and personalized learning strategies, all while strengthening your voice as a scholar and building your confidence as a student.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS (CHCGE Area E)
This course in an introduction to the laws, regulations, curriculum, standards and procedures for best practice as related to child health, safety and nutrition. The key components that ensure physical health, mental health and safety for both children and staff will be identified along with the importance of collaboration with families and health professionals. There will also be a focus on integrating concepts into everyday planning and program development for children.
The study and application of current research to attain emotional well-being in order to live a fulfilling life. Designed to respond to the need to understand and manage personal stress as it relates to the college student. Examination of personal wellness development and the roles of stress and stress management.
Introduction to the fundamentals of modern dance technique. Exploration of the history and culture of modern dance as well as creative expression through movement. Focus on foundational postures, alignments, structured improvisation and choreographed seqeuences.
A continuation of DANCE 101. Ongoing study of modern dance technique emphasizing structured improvisation and choreographed sequences at an intermediate level. Further exploration of the history and culture of modern dance and modern dance theory including the movement vocabularies of Graham, Horton, Cunningham, Limon and the post modern and contemporary styles of today.
Introduction to classical ballet movement. Fundamental ballet technique including barre exercise, center and across the floor combinations. Exploration of the vocabulary, history and culture. Focus on foundational postures, alignment and sequences.

Focuses on the exploration of major health issues, individual behaviors and personal responsibility in the various dimensions of health. Topics include nutrition, exercise, weight control, mental health, stress management, violence, substance abuse, reproductive health, disease prevention, aging, healthcare, and environmental hazards and safety.
Introduction to public health and basic the concepts and terminologies along with the history and accomplishments of public health officials and agencies. An overview of the functions of various public health professions and institutions. Topics include the epidemiology of infectious and chronic disease; prevention and control of diseases in the community including the analysis of the social determinants of health and strategies for eliminating disease, illness and health disparities among various populations; community organizing and health promotion programming; environmental health and safety; global health; and healthcare policy and management.
This course provides an introduction to holistic and complementary health techniques and practices such as Reiki, Acupuncture, Ayurveda, Chinese Traditional Medicine, Meditation, Massage, and Herbalism.
