Outstanding Scholar in Speech Communication
Named
Matt Sperrazza has been
selected as the outstanding scholar in speech communication for
the 2004-2005 academic year. For his accomplishment, Matt was
honored at a dinner on May 6 with other students named as outstanding
scholars in their respective fiedls. Matt has completed his second
year at CHC and is planning on majoring in communication at Azusa
Pacific University where he will transfer next year. Past winners
include Amy Bray (2002-2003) and Heather Stephens (2003-2004).

Speech Communication Instructors
Selected as Professors of the Year
Two speech communication
faculty have been selected as professors of the year at Crafton
Hills College for the 2004-2005 academic year. Rick Hogrefe, Associate
Professor and head of the speech communication program was selected
by his colleagues as the Outstanding Professor of the Year. He
shares the Assistant Professor of Music, Mark McConnell. Moreover,
Dave Moss was selected by ASB students as an outstanding professor
when they honored faculty members at a dinner on May 6. Dave teaches
part-time in the speech communication department at CHC as well
as at Mount San Jacinto College.
SBVC/CHC Intramural Speech Contest
On
November 18, 2004, San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills
College sponsored the inaugural Intramural Speech Contest. Students
enrolled in public speaking courses at both Valley and Crafton participated.
Each student delivered an original informative speech for a panel
of judges in two preliminary rounds, with the top six speakers advancing
to the final round. Four CHC students were finalists in the event. Crafton
Hills College student Melinda Aleman won the competition with her
speech on the 911 emergency response system. Brittany Cathey, another
CHC student, took second with her speech on suicide. CHC students
Nasreen Jahan and Christine Juedes were also finalists. Congratulations
to Melinda and all the students who participated.
Inland Empire Speech Educators
Forum
 Each
April, San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College sponsor
a forum for speech educators from throughout Southern California.
This year represents the third year the forum will be held. Plans
are underway right now for the forum. Check
