CRAFTON HILLS COLLEGE
President’s Letter
November 9, 2009

Dear Colleagues,

Today I am in New York at a conference sponsored by Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) and Policylink for leaders from non-profit, community, government, and philanthropic organizations who want to learn more about the HCZ holistic model which is breaking the cycle of generational poverty for thousands of children and families in Central Harlem. I am part of a team from the City of San Bernardino which is interested in submitting an application for the Promise Neighborhoods, an Obama administration initiative to replicate the Harlem Children’s Zone nonprofit model in 20 cities across the United States.

Accreditation (The Crafton Challenge):

  • The accreditation team of Kathryn Lehner and Chris Meyers met with the management team, the Crafton Council and the Educational Master Planning Committee on October 27 and stated they were impressed with the work and progress made on the recommendations from the Commission. We expect to review their report for correction of errors of fact before the end of November. The Commission will review our case in January and Cheryl Marshall and I will speak before the Commission to provide an update and answer any questions.
  • The Educational Master Planning Committee (EMPC) is being proactive in conducting facilitated interactive sessions with each of the senates and the management team. Each group will be asked if they are in general agreement with the set of strategic directions and goals formulated by the EMPC. Then the groups will be asked for specific, concrete steps that the college needs to take to make strong and steady progress toward each goal listed in a strategic direction.

Budget

  • Vice President of Administrative Services Charlie Ng just returned from the conference of the Association of Chief Business Officials. He reported that mid-year cuts to the budget may still be possible but the hope is that they will not be deep. The bad news is that the cuts made this year are permanent. The budget for 2010-11 is still problematic.
  • There will be an OSHA Update on November 12, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon in the Crafton Center that is open to all staff. Vice President Ng will report on the progress made on the OSHA recommendations that have been corrected and those that will need more time for resolution. We are using our safety budget for the corrections.

Current Recruitments:

  • We had a failed search for two positions in the Child Care Center and the positions are now reopened and posted

Transfer Tidbits: (Vice President Rebeccah Warren Marlatt represented CHC at a meeting at CSUSB and brought back the following information)

  • CSUSB is reducing expenditures (the CSU apportionment was cut by 25%) by reducing enrollments from last year’s 14,900 FTES to 13,026 for next year. The University at one time admitted twice as many transfers as first time freshman students. The current proportion is 53% first time freshmen; 47% community college transfer students.
  • Students must apply for transfer by November 30, 2009 for admission in fall 2010. There will be no acceptance of transfers in Winter and Spring quarters; students who miss the November deadline must wait a year to apply for transfer. In addition, all courses must be completed by admission and no lower-division transfers will be accepted.
  • In order to help CHC transfer students, Robert McAtee is having transfer workshops, all counselors are spreading the word, an email is being sent to all transfer ready students, and the information is being posted on the web site. All of us need to inform our students on the workshops and direct them to counseling and the college web site for information.

Student:

  • Congratulations to all who helped the Associated Students collect over 1000 boxes of cereal to donate to Mary’s Table. Thank you to the Associated Students and Student Life Director Ericka Paddock for providing the leadership on this project.

A final note

  • Thank you Larry Aycock for finding the error in the registration dates in a previous letter. Priority registration for spring starts November 16 with open registration on December 7. The spring schedule is slated to be on the web by the end of this week.
